NMAAHC Essay

CPMS100

This reflection demonstrates my growth because I adopt a more mature tone and highlight real issues. Whereas past essays discuss theories, this paper reflects upon actual events. After visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), I connect the exhibits I saw to concepts that I learned in class, such as the role of the media in perpetuating stereotypes about African Americans. In my analysis, I also acknowledge my unintentional contribution to such stigmas. I write honestly, which I wouldn't have done prior to Media Scholars as I feared it would be too 'personal' for analytical assignments in high school. Finally, I am most proud of this reflection because it's become more relevant in 2020. If we all educate ourselves on how the media can empower versus oppress black lives, then maybe we could bring communities closer together instead of driving them further apart.
