Internship Experience: Final Words

CPMS230

I found my practicum after I was cold-messaged on LinkedIn, but there are other ways of identifying internship opportunities. University job portals, such as HireSmith and Careers4Terps also offer listings from reputable companies. If you have exhausted those resources and are struggling to find openings, then I suggest reaching out to alumni, who are often more than willing to help fellow Terps after having gone through recruiting processes themselves.

Once you receive an interview invitation, meet the organization halfway and match their enthusiasm. Be professional but be yourself as you convey what you can do to help them; transparency is key regarding your and your supervisor’s expectations for your practicum so both parties can learn from the experience.

Finally, my advice for future Media Scholars is to be realistic. Approach your search with an open mind versus fixating on famous companies where peers may be interning. Although my experience might not appear as glamorous as theirs or even align with my major, it is still an opportunity to grow. For that reason, I am so grateful to have been a part of the Dive family.
